How We Express Ourselves
Welcome to out second to last unit! This unit is a real challenge for us, as we really have to use our thinking skills and self-management skills to complete do each part! But, it was also one of our favorite. We LOVED learning about the changed in human history over time through art! Here is what we learned this time!
Central Idea: The arts record and reflect changes in society throughout history
Function: How art reflects what is important to society
Change: Why and how art evolves over time
Form: Tools, materials, and perspectives used to create art
For the beginning of the unit we focused on the most simple and at the same time, most complicated questions - what are timelines? To help us understand this we started by looking at some of the most important tools in art - knives, paint, paper and more, and placing them on a timeline!
After we had a good understanding of how timelines work, we began to learn about 8 different types of art - film, literature, painting, theater...and the rest! We then each chose one we liked and both compared it to another, compared the oldest version to the newest version, and finally, created a timeline to demonstrate how the art has changed over time!
Our next couple of learning tasks were done online, but when we arrived back at class we started to create a large, class-sized timeline which we would slowly fill in as we went along!
Finally we were ready for our summative assessment! We filled in our timeline by researching about art in a particular place in the world, and following it through history. We then explained what we found to our friends, and how we thought this art was connected to the history and society at the time!
Finally, we finished off our unit by reflecting on our own work, and the work of our peers, and offering some advice and encouragement for the future!
We loved this unit, and can't wait to learn more about history!
