Summative Assessment Week!

 Hey everyone!

This was our final week of our current unit of inquiry. We were working on our summative assessments. The students started off with a research project on an iconic figure of their choice. Everyone made a sculpture of their icon for our classes version of a "wax museum". The sculptures will be on display on Monday  for the school to come look at. Everyone worked really hard and the museum is looking really amazing. The sculptures will be sent home on Tuesday and we will start our next unit of inquiry.

The sculptures were made out of salt dough which they really liked working with. If you want to make some at home the recipe is really easy. You mix 2 cups of flour, 1 cup of salt and 1 cup of water. The dough can either be put in the oven on low heat till it gets hard or they can air dry.

Here are some photos of the creative process!

Literacy Week

Hey everyone!

We had a great literacy week last week. We wrote a very interesting story as a school and the kids read some really great poetry for poem in your pocket day, as well as getting a special poetry lesson from a special guest. We had two students, Rikito and Sona in the final for the spelling bee on Friday, it was tough competition but they both did very well! Mr. Ulu came by and recited a very interesting poem in Turkish for our class and the class did some very interesting creative writing with Ms. Katherine. We also did reading buddies with the Pre-K class. The students did an amazing job reading with the younger children.

This week we are finishing up our current unit of inquiry and next week we will be moving on the next one. We are focusing mostly on finishing the unit of inquiry as well as finishing up our current math unit.

These videos are helpful, sometimes we watch them in class to help explain the math concepts. If they are stuck at home, these videos may be helpful if you want to check them out.

May 13th-21st

Hi everyone,

We had a really great week this week in grade 4. On Wednesday we had 3 visitors come to talk about icons from their time. The students came up with interview questions to ask them and the visitors from the university had materials to show the kids. It was a very interesting morning and they asked some amazing questions. I was very proud of them.

In preparation for literacy week the students helped to create the reading trees and displays for each floor for next week. They did a great job.

We went to the park for some creative writing/ drawing and reading and got inspired by our surroundings with the grade 5 class.

We spent some time learning about characteristics of negative icons, specifically Hitler and his influence on Germany and the world but also we analyzed the characters from the book Wonder.

Interview with people from the university. We asked them about historic icons from their past. The students came up with their own questions based on our central ideas and lines of inquiry
